Award winning sculptor Doug Adams grew up on a small Appaloosa horse ranch and farm in northern Utah where he developed the strong work ethic that, combined with an innate sense of innovation and creativity, led to his unique bell sculptures.
A stint in the military as a tank mechanic first stimulated Adam’s nascent interest in steel. A 30-year career in steel construction and welding furthered his education. An artistic wife inspired and fueled his inventive leanings. Together he and Dianne began arranging Doug’s collection of old steel machinery, automobile parts, firearms, hand tools, antique artifacts, and cast-off steel tanks into phantasmagoric bell sculptures with an authentic ring.
“I want to recycle not only our abundant American steel, but also our American past” Adams said, “recognizing and preserving the legacy of the hard working men and women who built this nation.”
Adams’ 2nd Amendment series celebrates what he considers one of our most fundamental freedoms. “The first amendment, our guaranteed right to the truths that manifest themselves in our hearts, is backed up by the second, our right to defend ourselves, our families, and all our inherent rights. Our Freedom Bells echo the ring of the Liberty Bell. Let freedom ring!”
Working in a small, rural studio, Doug concentrates on welding and metal finishes while Dianne creates the melted glass and adds the rock elements in a Zen-like blending of earth powers. For this series, Adam’s has commissioned Ron Spomer to christen each sculpture base with a one-of-a-kind, three-shot group fired by a variety of rifles and cartridges.
Each 2nd Amendment Freedom Bell in each sculpture is carefully selected for its sound clarity and tone, then hand embellished with Doug’s distinctive designs and patinas, each piece built to withstand the test of time, indoors and out. The ring of Adams’ bells have called thousands to dinner, to worship, to joy and games, announcing visitors and special occasions, or just to celebrate the clarion call of sculpted steel well struck.
