SMALL GAME HUNTING
Small game includes rabbits and squirrels, raccoons and hares. Any small mammals commonly hunted for the pot. In the mid-20th century cottontail rabbits and tree squirrels were the 1st and 2nd most commonly harvested game animals in North America, feeding millions of folks. These days the resurgence of turkeys and deer has overshadowed small game. Yet these animals provide wonderful opportunities to get afield, hone our woodsmanship and train new hunters at minimal expense. You don't need to draw a tag to hunt squirrels or count antler tines before taking a bunny. And the meat is delectable.
